Sydney has been named the 11th most expensive city in the world for tourists by travel site, TripAdvisor.

TripIndex Cities, an annual report by research firm, Ipsos, for TripAdvisor, compared 40 top tourist cities from all over the world, with the most expensive spot taken by the resort town Cancún in Mexico.

The report looked at the cost of an average three-night stay for two people in each of the cities calculating costs of accommodation in a four-star hotel, visits to three attractions, transport and food.

A stay in Cancún in Mexico will set you back an average of $2,546 for three nights. The next most expensive destinations are New York ($2,407), London ($2,368), Paris ($2,037) and Tokyo ($2,006).

Sydney ranked just outside the top ten most expensive spots, after Dubai (ranked ninth) and Singapore (10th), with the average cost of a three-night stay in Sydney coming to $1,874. The report finds the cheapest destination in the world to visit is Hanoi in Vietnam with a three-night stay costing an average of $923. South-East Asia proved to be a value for money destination all round with four of the top ten cheapest cities located there. Besides from Hanoi, Bangkok in Thailand ($1,037), Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia ($1,153) and Manila in the Philippines ($1,166) took the fourth, seventh and ninth places respectively. For a European holiday, the cheapest cities were Warsaw in Poland ($932), Lisbon in Portugal ($1,143) and Berlin in Germany ($1,173) which placed second, sixth and tenth respectively.
TripAdvisor spokesperson, Scott Wegener said they did not collect data on any other Australian city other than Sydney for the report.
